Lafayette seems to have changed the spelling of his last name to Mollihan or Molihan after his mother left West Virginia with his brothers and sisters and moved first to Kentucky and then to Ohio.

Lafayette served on the Union side of the Civil War in Company B,90th
Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment as a private. The 90th Ohio Infantry Regiment was organized on 29 August 1862 and was mustered out on 13 June 1865. This Regiment was involved in Sherman's march to the sea as well as the Battles of Chickamauga and Atlanta. Lafayette enlisted 26 August 1863, just before the Battle of Chickamauga. He died in the General Hospital in Chattanooga, TN on 31 May 1864 from acute diarrhea.

According to James Harry Mollohan, Jr. of Morgantown, WV, Jacob and Margaret moved to the Little Kanawha River in what is now Braxton County, WV in 1836 where they spend the rest of their lives.

However, according to B. M. Jacob's father, Peter, was said to be a veteran of the war of 1812.
