Charles and Elizabeth settled on land granted to them by Lord Fairfax. These lands were located on the waters of Holly Creek in what is now Webster County, WV.


On 6 July 1836, Charles was elected as a Justice of the Peace in Braxton County, VA. Charles also served as a Sheriff of Braxton County, VA. Concerning Charles serving as Sheriff, we find the following in Sutton's History of Braxton County on page 321:

"Charles Mollohan was a fearless man of unusual physical strength. On one occasion he had an execution [writ to serve] against John Wyatt, and the only property owned by Wyatt was a gray mare which he locked up in his stable, and refused to deliver her to the Sheriff. Mollohan undertook to pry the door off the wooden hinges with a piece of timber, when Wyatt came out with an axe for battle. After making some threats, he laid the axe down. Mollohan picked it up and said, 'Why John, this is the very thing I need.' and proceeded to cut off the wooden hinges of the door. He took the mare to Squire Morrison's and put her in pasture, and it wasn't long before Wyatt paid the debt and redeemed his property.

On another occasion, he went to collect a debt off Mr._________, who was a very strong man, and a fighter. Mollohan found him at work in the field, and his coat laying close by. He picked up the coat and this very much enraged the man who threw down his hat, and prepared for battle. The Sheriff picked up his hat also and laughing at the man's predicament, walked off with his hat and coat."

FEDERAL CENSUS: 1840 Braxton County, Virginia; Page 246, Line 18; Information from 1840 Census: Charles Molohan is listed as head of house. This enumeration lists one white male under age 5, one white male between age 15 and under 20, one white male between age 20 and under 30, two white females under age 5, one white female between age 5 and under10, one white female between age 20 and under 30, number of persons in each family employed in agriculture was two.

Charles received his license to preach on 11 August 1849. At the second annual session of the Methodist Episcopal Conference at Clarksburg, Harrison County, VA  on 10 October 1849, Charles was recommended for Deacons Orders and he became one of the most powerful preachers and laymen the Methodist Conference ever had. It was by his shrewdness and influence that held the church and missions together.

Charles moved to Gallipolis, OH  in 1856 and stayed there until 1872 when he relocated to a large tract of land approximately two miles south of Marion in Marion County, KS.

Ivan was a Timberman and operated sawmills throughout Braxton County. The following is a story printed in the Braxton Democrat-Central Newspaper 0n 9 August 1985, and written by Sheriff Given, Editor:


"Mr. Ivan Mollohan . . . lives in Clay County, Hoarse Ridge, gets his mail at Duck at Nottingham's store and votes in Servia in Braxton County, when they don't challenge his vote. After serving 15 months in the CCC's at Camp Cranberry, Camp Dyer and Camp Nicholas, he became Braxton County's best sawmill man. He can build any part of a sawmill from scratch. He timbered his own farm, 262 acres, located about 6 miles from Gassaway and then sold the land to Kenton Meadows Construction Co. He had the most modern and best sawmill in Braxton County. He had everything, a debarker, re-saws, sawdust silo, a class mill, all destroyed by fire in 1970. Ivan was part of the home front war from 1933 to 1936. It was the CCC's that waged war against poverty, closed factories, banks, etc. He was a barber and carpenter for the CCC's and helped build camps consisting of five barracks, 40 men to a barrack, 24 feet wide and 60 feet long. One administration building, mess hall, captain's quarters and supply house. In all, there were nine buildings to make up one CCC Camp. Ivan helped build Camps Dyer, Cranberry and Nicholas. Each camp had 200 men, 10 trucks, one road grader, a bulldozer and 5 or 6 pick up trucks. Camp Dyer was an original old soldier's home and was converted into a CCC camp. One original building still stands today. Besides being a camp carpenter, Ivan was also the camp barber, a job which paid him an extra five dollars more a month."


Ivan died while on a fishing trip.
