According to James Harry Mollohan, Jr., after the marriage of James and Martha, they settled near her parent's place on Birch River, Kanawha County, VA. They later moved to Little Kanawha River and then moved to, what is now, Webster County, WV, and finally settled on land they received via a land grant in 1819 near Caress, VA (now Braxton County, WV). Here they remained, raising a family. Both are buried in a family plot, on the farm, near the orchard.

However, according to B. M. Mollohan of Hacker Valley, WV in her book, after the marriage of James and Martha, they started their own home on a twenty-five acre tract of land on the Back Fork of the Elk River above Webster Springs. Being the children of pioneers, they soon turned their faces to the wilderness again, moving to the Back Fork of the Holly River in, what would become Northern Webster County.

On this property which James had bought from his brother-in-law, Joseph Brown, there was an excellent mill seat. Soon he constructed a log mill and dam on the site. This mill served the community until the entire structure was washed away in a flood during the 1850's. James was too old to consider rebuilding and the mill seat stood vacant at his death. In addition to being a miller, he was also a farmer and a shoemaker.

James and Mattie's home was on property known as the Old Mollohan place. The house set in the bottom some 100 feet from where the public road enters or crosses what is known as Hamrick Hollow.
When he was old and ill, James asked his family to load him into the sled and take him for a drive through the field near his home. During that drive, he pointed out the place where he wanted to be buried, on a bluff overlooking the waters of the Holly River at a point where it makes a sharp bend towards the north on it's way to join the Elk River at Holly. A few weeks later, James died.

James, along with his brother George, tried their hand at the Salt Shipping trade on the Little Kanawha River. During his lifetime, he was active in community affairs. He helped with appraisements and was always available when anyone needed help. He died of consumption and his widow, Nancy, who was born about 1808, was reported to have moved to Kentucky and later to Ohio. She was reported to have died in Ohio in 1892.

In the Chase County Historical Sketches, which was sent by e-mail to this researcher by Lorna Marvin, the following can be found:

"James and Mary Mollohan, their four sons and two daughters moved to Chase County near Wonsevu in the spring of 1903. Mr. Mollohan and two sons erected a tent on the unimproved land and at once set to the task of building a large barn with a temporary floor. When this was completed he returned to White City for his wife and daughters. The family lived in the barn. The children climbed a ladder to the hayloft for their bedroom. The two older sons came a year later and all moved into a newly constructed house. The family grew up in this roomy house with Mr. Mollohan's mother staying with them a good share of each year and the remaining part of the year with her daughter.

James and Mary, a school teacher, were married in Marion, Kansas and took their wedding trip on the first passenger train that traveled on the Marion-McPherson branch of the Santa Fe.
On their Chase County farm were two streams of water fed by many springs. Mr. Mollohan built cattle sheds, cribs, and granaries and fenced an adjoining feed lot with a small stream of very fresh water running through it. Here he fed cattle and hogs in winter. In summer cattle grazed on his pasture land. The virgin soil had not been broken up until his plows turned the soil into productive fields. Through the years the farmstead became well sheltered with shade trees and the yard was attractive with flowers and shrubs. An orchard grew nearby. This was their home until after their 56th wedding anniversary. For a few years they also had a home in Marion. Wonsevu, an inland settlement in the early 1900's had two general stores, a church and school of about fifty pupils with one teacher teaching eight grades. Mr. and Mrs. Mollohan were faithful workers in the church and were interested and active in community affairs."

John was listed in the County Courthouse Records as a Silversmith and residing in Ohio.

I am not sure that the following applies to this John Mollohan, but it seems like the most likely explanation at this time;

John appears to have enlisted as a Sgt. in Captain Patrick B. Duffy's Co. (C), 9 Battalion Virginia Infantry (Hansbrough's Batt'n Light Infantry) of the CSA on 18 May 1861 in Sutton, Braxton County, VA for one year. John then deserted on returning from service to the Greenbrier River on 8 August 1861.

John then enlisted at Wheeling on 17 March 1862 (some records indicate 7 December 1861) and served as a private with D Company, 10th Reg. West Virginia Infantry Vols. on the Union side. At the time that he enlisted, he stated that he was residing in Weston and was 22 years old. He then re-enlisted as a veteran volunteer on 29 February 1864 in Beverly, WV and was transferred to Company B in March 1865. Medical records indicate that he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, had gray eyes and light hair, and that he was treated for gonorrhea 4 June 1862; jaundice from 30 November to 1 December 1862; typhoid 10 May 1863. He was slightly wounded in the side at the Battle of Winchester, VA on 19 September 1864. He was captured at Cedar Creek 19 October 1864 and was brought from Knoxville, TN to Camp Chase, OH 6 May 1865 where he mustered out on June 29, 1865. He is on a list of unclaimed Union Civil War medals at the West Virginia State Archives.

John gave a statement on 28 January 1865, which listed his age as 20 and a resident of Braxton County, WV. John stated that he was arrested in April 1862 by Capt. William P. O'Brien of the 3rd Regiment Virginia State Line with a guard of 5 or 6 men and taken to Bath County where he was assigned to Co. H (Capt. O'Brien's Co.) 3rd Regiment VSL. The 3rd Regiment VSL was disbanded in March 1863 and was reorganized 11 April1863 (along with a new company, Co. F: Capt McNeil's Co. from Pocahontas County which had previously served in the 2nd Regiment VSL) as the 19th Virginia Cavalry. John enlisted 1 May 1863 in Co. H (Capt. O'Brien's Co.) of the 19th Virginia Cavalry and served with them until he deserted on the night of 28 April 1864 escaping the vigilance of the pickets in the dark and walked 100 miles home. John was captured by Union forces in Clay County 12 May 1864  just 10 miles from his home. He was made a P.O.W. and held at the Atheneum Prison in Ohio until 10 June 1864 when he was sent to Camp Chase near Columbus, Ohio on 11 June 1864. John stated that he was 19 years of age, was 5 feet, 8 inches tall, light complexion, brown hair and hazel eyes, a farmer and resident of Clay County, WV. John was charged with being a bushwhacker and robber and was held until he took the oath of allegiance and was released 8 February 1865.

The Third Virginia State Line of nine companies was organized in 1862 and was composed of cavalry and Infantry. This regiment led in the State Line fight at Prestonsburg, Kentucky on December 4, 1862. Cavalry companies of this regiment were reported to total 230 men in January 1863 and its infantry companies included 290 men. At this time the regiment was stationed at Bath Alum Springs, Virginia. Most of the men of the 3rd Virginia State Line enlisted in Colonel William L. Jackson's 19th Virginia Cavalry on April 11, 1863.

Most of Company G - Captain William P. O'Brien's Company – later served in Company H, 19th Virginia Cavalry after the State Line disbanded. Several members of the unit were from Roane County in what is now West Virginia. Officers for this company were: Captain William P. O'Brien, 1st Lieutenant Henry G. Sampson, and 2nd Lieutenant Marrcellus J. West.

Josiah seems to have changed the spelling of his last name to Mollihan or Molihan after his mother left West Virginia with his brothers and sisters and moved first to Virginia and then to Ohio.

Josiah served on the Union side of the Civil War in Company A, 3rd West Virginia Cavalry as a private along with his brother Edward. Josiah enlisted on 17 December 1861 at Hamden, OH for three years. He and Edward reported to Camp Carlisle, VA on 23 December 1861 and on 24 December 1861 both brothers deserted. Josiah was arrested on 30 December1861 and was charged by sentence of General Court Martial on 25 February 1862 per General Order No. 14. However, the records are not clear as to what the actual charge was, the sentence determined, or the punishment rendered.

Josiah deserted a second time on 6 May 1862 and was arrested by the Sheriff of Vinton County, OH on 26 June 1862 in Vinton County along with his brother Edward. He and Edward were transferred to Atheneum Military Prison in Wheeling, VA (WV) on 3 July 1862 He was listed as being 19 years of age, height 6 feet 3 inches, complexion fair, eyes blue, hair mouse color, occupation farmer. Josiah and Edward were sent to Washington City (DC) on 22 July 1862. Josiah was tried 20 October 1862 before a General Court Martial and found guilty of desertion, sentenced to forfeit all pay and allowances due him for the term of one year and hard labor in the Brooklyn Naval Yard. Josiah was transferred to the Brooklyn Naval Yard, however, the sentence was reprieved by Major General Sigel on 18 November 1862 and Josiah was returned to his unit.

Josiah was absent next in April 1863 when he was left in the Convalescent Camp at Pleasantons Landing, VA on 13 April 1863.

Companies A and B of the 3rd West Virginia Cavalry (commanded by Captain Seymour B. Conger) were attached to Second Brigade (commanded by Col. Thomas C. Devin), First Division (commanded by Brig. Gen. John Buford), Cavalry Corps (commanded by Maj. Gen. Alfred Pleasonton) at the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1-3, 1863. As the Cavalry Corps of the Union Army slowly pursued Lee's retreating Army south from the Battle of Gettysburg, Josiah was wounded in the shoulder at Falling Waters, WV on 14 July 1863. He was sent to the hospital in Frederick, MD. On 5 August Josiah wrote a letter to Col. Cheesborough in which he states "I have been under treatment at this Hospital since the 16th of July for a wound in my shoulder received at Falling Waters while in service with the 3rd Virginia Cavalry and as I shall not be fit for duty for a month, I respectfully solicit a furlough to visit my family in Vinton County, Ohio, where I learn my brother is laying dangerously ill." It appears that he was granted a ten day furlough starting 13 August 1863 and when he failed to report back as ordered on 24 August, he was reported as AWOL. It would appear that he returned (or was returned) since Josiah was transferred to Lincoln US Army General Hospital in Washington City (DC) on 18 October 1863. The official records also indicate that Josiah was listed as a deserter from the Lincoln US Army Hospital on 28 December1863 when he failed again to return upon the expiration of furlough.

Josiah was discharged and mustered-out by virtue of re-enlistment as a Veteran Volunteer under the provisions of General Order #191 of Series 1863 of the War Department on 6 February 1864. He signed his Veteran Volunteer re-enlistment papers on 5 February 1864 and was assigned to his old unit. He was mustered into Company A, 3rd Reg't West Virginia Cavalry on 8 February 1864 and was given a 30 day furlough. Josiah was paid a $60.00 bounty for re-enlisting, $13.00 first months pay in advance, and $32.03 back pay. When Josiah failed again to return from furlough, he was charged with desertion on 9 March 1864.

Josiah was arrested in Vinton County, Ohio on 5 September 1864. Col. Thomas commanding Post Headquarters at Gallipolis, Ohio wrote the following to the Provost Marshall of 11th District Ohio at Ironton, Ohio on 9 September 1864;

"There is now confined in jail at this Post a notorious deserter and desperado by the name of Josiah Mollohan. Said Mollohan was arrested and brought to this Post by a squad of men belonging to the 192nd Reg't Pa. Vols. under the command of Lieut. John F. Snyder. The prisoner is subject to your order. Please notify me at once what disposition you wish made of him."

Josiah was transported to Columbus, Ohio and was received there on 22 September 1864. Was then transported to Atheneum Prison in Wheeling, WV and from there, to Cumberland, MD.
There is no record of Josiah being discharged.

His cousin, Arnold, also served in the 3rd but in Company M.
